Anzac Day

The Remembrance Day poppy is increasingly becoming a symbol for Anzac Day too.  I'm glad, it's beautiful and as soon as you see it, you know what it means.

Like any good tourist to Canberra I visited the Australian War Memorial when we were in town a few years ago.  I was expecting a lot of reflective and sombre history which there was.  What I wasn't expecting was to be emotionally overwhelmed when I walked into Commemorative Courtyard and saw the rows and rows of more than 100,000 names of fallen soldiers.  It kicks you in the gut.

  1. It is a completely emotional experience, thinking about all the young people who gave their lives.

Just walking up to the service we went to this morning made me well up, and hearing a rendition of the Last Post with Waltzing Matilda did me in completely!

I love to see people still attending the services, especially young men, who would be the ones going off to war today, should we be that unlucky! And to see the old diggers there, well...they are AMAZING!

PS: we only made the 9am service, and then only the last 15 minutes! But would love to aim for the dawn service next year!

  2. I agree, a totally emotional experience. It is beautiful and overwhelming all at the same time. It is definitely something that anyone taking a trip to Canberra should take the time to see.

  3. It's very true Jones and Nat. I remember thinking that all Australians owe it to themselves, and those that fought for them, to visit the memorial.
